FAQ's

Visas

Where can I get my visa?

Your visa options are varied and depend on two crucial factors: the duration of your stay in Thailand and your country of origin. For most western travelers, an Entry Visa of 15 days (via land) or 30 days (via air) is available upon arrival and free of charge. For longer visits you must apply for a Tourist Visa. For details, we recommend you visit the Thai embassy in your home country. This link will direct you to a thorough listing of embassies around the world.

Weather

What time of the year is best to travel?

We provide weather details in every trip page under the "season" heading. You may also want to check out Thailand's weather map .

Safety

I am concerned about the political stability of the country I am traveling to.

UPDATE: As of today (May 3, 2010) we are still encouraging travelers to visit Thailand. We are located far from the Red Shirts' protest areas and we can direct you to all the best (and safest) places in Bangkok and Thailand.

Tipping

Is tipping common in most Asian countries?

Tipping is common in Asia but people generally don't tip as heavily as they would in the United States. We do recommend that you tip your travel guides. A 10% service charge is often rendered in large Thai restaurants, but not at roadside stands or small restaurants. Look for it on your bill. Tipping further is at your own discretion.

Trip Style

I'm not sure which trip best suits me.

Each of our trips is grouped under trip types , which will give you a good idea for the aim of each trip. (Is it an outdoors adventure? Will you come away with a more profound understanding of the culture?) In addition, we provide you with a physical demand ranking at the bottom of every trip page.

What to Pack

What type of bag should I pack?

In addition to a medium-sized bag for clothes and other necessary items, remember to bring along an additional small pack for day trips and hikes.

Can I store excess luggage at my starting point?

If your trip departs from the New Road Guest House then you are guaranteed a place for your luggage.

Treks and Activities

How difficult is the trek?

As no two treks or activities are alike, please see the physical rating for each trip as they vary accordingly.

Who will be my group leader?

A local, experienced, English-speaking guide will accompany you on every trip. We believe very strongly in hiring professional and courteous Thai staff for your travels. See our "Traveling Responsibly" page for more details.

Is it possible to make changes to the itinerary of a group tour?

It is only possible to adjust the itinerary when the group size is small, in which case the trip may offer more flexibility.
